Recreation and Parks wraps a number of key upgrades

05 March 2025

From new synthetic pitches in Khayelitsha and Delft, to lighting up Elsies River’s public facilities and a new roof for the Retreat Civic Centre – the Recreation and Parks Department has crossed a number of key projects off its ‘to do’ list.

The Recreation and Parks Department has hundreds of facilities in its portfolio, including sport fields, recreation centres and resorts.

Between September 2024 and the end of January, several key milestones were achieved as part of the Department’s maintenance, repairs and upgrades programme.

Six projects were either completed, or phased milestones achieved, with an assigned budget of just over R43 million.

These include the installation of synthetic pitches in Khayelitsha and Delft, new hockey pitches in Bellville and at Hartleyvale, and upgrades to the tune of just over R3 million at the Vygieskraal Stadium.

‘The upkeep of our recreational facilities is a massive undertaking, considering the very long list of assets. Not only do officials have the unenviable task of ensuring that the available budget is assigned in an equitable manner, but there are also a range of challenges like securing facilities, and minimising potential delays to projects.

‘The City is committed to providing quality and safe spaces for sport and recreation, and the completion of these projects speaks to that commitment. I encourage our communities to make full use of the facilities, and to help us protect them from theft, vandalism and other anti-social behaviour,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.

Details of the six projects are outlined below:

Meanwhile, in Retreat, the contractor recently handed over the Civic Centre following the completion of a roof replacement project.

The work started in November 2024, at an estimated cost of approximately R1,6 million (excluding VAT).

Minor additional works are being completed, but the facility is available for bookings.

The public is advised that bookings can be made through the City's website and through the appropriate booking office.
